CITY COUNCIL.—(SPECIAL MEETING).

A rpectat, meeting of the Council to hear nppeals "trains'; valuation was held to-day. Present : The Mayor, Councillors Buchanan, Biett, Hurst, Isaacs, -Cosgrave, Daldy, and Holdship. APPEALS. The valuation of the National Insurance Company's office? Queen-street, was reduced £25 on the application of Mr H. O. Williams manager, ths rent only being €150 while the valuation was put at £200 A similar application hy Levy and Co was dealt with in the same way.

The assessment of Mr Tin by's cottage, City Road, was reduced fron £2) to £15.

Objections by Dr. Lee and Mr Costello were rejected.

Mr James Harris had his valna ion reduced by £10.

Mr.). H. Busby's valuation w: s reduced to £130.

Mr. Richard Dickson objected to the valuation of his houses at the coiner of Anglesea-street and Ponsonby Eoad. He said Mr. Johnson paid onJy £40, and had more land. The valuation was reduced to £55.

Mr Eastwood's back house was reduced £5. The fiout house was ordered to remain as at present.

Two shops in Grey-street, belonging to Mr Wall, were reduced £5 each.

Applications from S. M. Smith and W. J. Isles were rejected.

L\ house bfciongicg to Dr. Campbell was rerluced by £10.

Thomas Horan's assessment was reduced to £15.

Mr Joseph Ellis got the rating of the Exchange Hotel reduced to £250. ■ Mr -R. Borne'sho vuse,Wyndham-street,was reduced £5. The assessment of his office was not altered v THE MARKKTHOUSE. A petition was received from Mr Greenwood and stallholders, praying for alterations to the Markethouse, so as to protect stallholders from thieves and rats.

The City Surveyor recommended the work, and said it would cost £220.

The petition was referred to the Market Committee.
