A Notorious Scoundrel.
A most notorious burglar, who has been for some months past a perpetual annoyance to the inhabitants, of City West and Ponsonby through his constant acts of pilfering, has been captured by Detective Jeffrey, and was brought up at the Police Court this morning and remanded for a week. This man (James Dunne) was convicted in 1871 of seven clear cases of larceny while living at the Thames, and on being confronted by Detective Jeffrey, presented a revolver at the constable's head, but was suddenly prevented from carrying his threat into effect. The man was known to be living by theft, and his habit was, on dark Sunday evenings when persons were gone to church, to lift windows and commit his depredations. Several of the felonious acts of this eveningprowler have recently been brought home to him ; and the s'lk shawl, value £5, found by Jeffrey in the man's possession has this morning been identified by the lady who owns it. This discovery alone is sufficient to find a conviction, had there been no other equally clear cases against him. He will be brought up again on Thursday next to answer the many misdeeds alleged to have been committed by him.
