THE PLOUGHING MATCH.

The annual ploughing and draining miatch, fostered and encouraged by the agrioultu'rists and farmers forming the New Zealand Agricultural Society, was held yesterday afc Papatoitoi, in a convenient paddock ; belonging to Mr. Thomas Rogers, v The ploughing matches in the old country, despite the associciating aristocratic feed,., without which nothing seems possible in England, have done indirectly a large amount of good in stimulating the arms of industry,' and awakening the peasaancry to a fflise of^ ; the dignity of labour. The competitors formed three classes ; the first class for lads over eighteen, with either swing or, singw •;■■; furrowplough ; second clasfe for boys under, eighteen, with single-furrow ploughs, and the third class for double furrow ploughs; entrance fee in each case 2s 6d. The judges ' were Messrs John Hedge of Waiuku, John r Wallace of Flat Bush, and T. D. Cleghornof Epsom. The competition commenced in real earnest about ten o'clock. The prizes were jobtained (Ist. class) by Henry, Brown Ist, £5; 2nd. £3 ; Thomas Lindale 3rd. £i; (second class) Wm. Gray £3, Malcolm Clark £1 ; (3rd. class) James Langford £5, Wm. Morris £3, Draining Ist. prize, Joseph Harper £5 ; 2nd. prize, John Hogan. £3: Several extra and special prizes were also given. About fifty of the gentlemen subsequently sat down to an excellent dinner; Mr Goodfellow in the chair, and Mr Wood- . ward in the vice-chair. The loyal and patriotic toasts followed in rapid succession, which were spoken to by Messrs Andrews, Murphy, Wallace, Robertson, Hedge, Gray, Calvert, Bainbridge and other gentlemen. - Amid comicialities the evening merrily passed, and the festival closed at a reasonable hour.
