COROMANDEL.
(From our own Correspondent.) «-i „ « June 15 u-oiconda Company. The Golconda Gold Mining Company - likely to make a new start under th-^s^^sj. ment of Mr Edward Thomas ; in'tr^l^^^ are now employed cleaning out thi level preparatory to commencing! |i^ v< shaft for deeper sinking. On WeMcsda lasb Mr William Home, who has fjL m charge of the company's property ftSVeoine time, under instructions from the directors handed over the mine and battery pr.opertv to Mr Thomas, with the view of his workine ib on tribute ; this no doubt is a very proper course to take under existing circumstances provided permanent works be introduced and adhered to as the tribute term progresses No doubt Mr Thomas understands all this' and will do the property justice, if left to himself, being a thorough and practical miner, and of considerable Thames experience. The property, if well handled will no doubt be one of the best on the field'
City of Auckland Company. This Company have now on hand 650 lbs. of picked specimen stone, and this is being daily increased from the stopes above intermediate level. The general stuff in paddock will be crushed immediately the Government tramway being laid down reaches the mine. It is the intention of the manager to resume work, the leader in the intermediate level when put in having carried gold for a considerable distance along the foot of the drive.
The Three Brothers
Are getting a parcel of good specimens from their main reef, and have now about 25 tens of good payable quartz on hani.
Increased Tramway Charges. The Government have authorised an incrrase to bs madejin the charges for conveyhnce along the tramway line, and at the same time calling for tenders from persons willing to lease the line, having (as they say) lost £1,000 per annum on it. This seems an extraordinary course to take —advertising the tramway to let, and at the same time increase the rates. Any person taking t*>e tramway will, of course, fix his own tariff, and submit it for appi-oval. Until this be trier", why then increase the rates. I should imagine under the circumstances the better way would be to invite tenders, stating the lowest subsidy required per annum, to take over and work the line. However, I do not think that many will be found to tender. Mr Keary having so long and ably porfo^med his duties in coiinectioa with the management of this tramway, and even with a slight increase in the charges, in consequence of the decrease in the traffic to the mills, the public will be perfectly satisfied. Bismarck. Tbe Bismarck GoldmiDg Company have obtained a haul of good specimens from the stopes above the van level, this is the lowest level yet opened upon, and proves the existence of payable quartz to a great depth on the Tokatea range. Gold of a payable nature has also been found within thirty feet of the Tokstea boundary line, which is also encom-aging prospects for the Tokntea company, and also shews that gold is likely to be found in this level when it reaches to their own mine. The Bismarck company have now 250 lbs. of picked stone on hand, sni is increasing the amount by a few pounds daily.
