So far, they have been characterised with great good taste and delicacy o f literary touch that is rather agreeabje when constrasted with the vulgar attempts sometimes seen. He professes to be pj-oud of his friendship for Mr Gillon, but he assumes the position of the "Candid Friend," and tickles him under the fifth lib, just in a jocular way, you know. But he is no respecter of persons, and is prodigal and indiscriminate in his favours. It is a new feature, and will probably develope into a want. The Innocent Stranger. The man Dieval, who had such a peculiar Teputation, is still about here on account of not having an opportunity of getting away. The very good Catholics who took him by the hand on the strength of his forged testimonials were very much scandalised when the discovered the viper they had been harboring. Bat the little would-be somebody's, who are really nobody's, were the most cut up of all, and were at aloes to vent their spleen upon some one. Even after the whole thing was laid bare, one fine old bigoted but great-hearted Catholic priest did not despair, and wanted to convert the rascal, but he "was advised that that would be much more difficult for him than for the other to convert one pound notes into tens.
The Plasterer's Monopoly. Somebody has been putting advertisements in Lloyd's Weekly newspaper, stating that plasterers are wanted. The plasterers here have been having a nice thing lately ; their own prices and their own time to do the work required. They censtantly worked upon reporters, and got the papers to take the matter up. But the whole thing is not worth talking about. There may not be an overplus of work just now, but will be abundance in a few months, and was plenty when the advertisement was sent home.
Rape. A man. named James Cameron has been committed for trial for rape on a girl 14 3 ears of age.
