Riding out the Storm.
The barque William Gifford, which put to sea from Oamaru on Saturday, experienced the full effects of the gale. When she was hove-to a terrific Bea struck her, smashing her Bulwarks, starting the covering board amidships, and shifting the cargo, when the vessel Keeled over. Capt. Bishop thinking she might founder, bore up for Lyttelton. Lawyers at Loggerheads. In this morning's Times, Mr Smith throws down the challenge to Mr Macassey. After stating that the Qtiar&ian had his authority to give up his name, and had indemnity against all consequences, he says: "I am quite prepared to substantiate the charges conveyed by that letter if the gentleman referred to is desirous of public investigation; and, I doubt not, an elucidation of the truth on these matters would tend to clear the moral atmosphere of the legal protession in Dunedin by shewing how very slender are the pretenoions of that gentleman to set up the high moral" pedestal of which he has hitherto appeared to claim the exclusive occupation. Cyrus Haley's Family. The Times says Cyrus Haley's family are a burthen on the province through the indiscretion of the Superintendent in offering the ,gaol here for Haley's detention, and adds— * Let it be understood whether the provinces must manage their own offenders after conviction, so that similar cases may not occur." Immigration Agency. The Superintendent advises the home agent of Mr Vogel's scheme, re utilising the Otago agency for emigration, remarking it will destroy its distinctiveness, and he therefore does not agree to it.
