THE ACCIDENT NEAR THE RAILWAY AT MERCER.
The following are the particulars of ; the accident near the railway at Mercer, recorded in our Tuesday's issue :— Meters '. Brogden and Sons' ballastiag engine was going up with a carriage attached, in which was Mr Henderson and some others. When about three-fourths of a mile from Mercer, and at a spot where the road runs parrallel with the railway, af ( man named Thorne McGuinon was Been driving a cart along the road from Mercer. Onfthe approach of the train, the horse shied and backed across the road to the opposite side of the railway into the swamp, and turned the cart over on top of the man. The driver, who was in front, saw the horse shy, ■ bufche was past before the.cart was upset. Mr; Dent (plate-layer), however, who was in the . t carriage at the tail-end of the train, saw th« accident, and did his very best, shouting himself hoarse before he could get the engine stopped. The engine was ultimately reversed and the train returned to the spot. In the meantime a man working at the tunnel, and ; much nearer to the scene, hastened thither and managed to extricate McGruinpn, the _ man. Otherwise he must infallibly hay«» been smothered in the mud and wato* ' was right under the box of the car!&X_Ji»^;i*^ his arm sticking out. He was tsi^^y^S^p,'S the train to Tuakau, and attended to tty.tv. Corbett, who would not let him move till today, when he was brought into the hospital, | and is progressing favourably.
