(Per Press Telegram Agency.) >c Monday. Vessels Driven to Sea.—Damage to
Foreshore
A terrific south-west gale sprung, up. on Friday evening, and lasted till Sunday morning. The steamer Maori and the following vessels ran before the gale, and none of them have since returned: Brigan tines :- Endeavour. Mary King, Kate Brain. Schooners': Elibank Castle, Mary Ellen, Pearl, Success. Ketches ; Janet, Eliza McPhee, Lucy and James. Owing to the obstruction to .the shingle-drift. by the wre.ked brig Princess Alice, the. sea, washed away a considerable portion of the foreshore, damaging the landing service and narrowly sparing the railway; about £SOO worth of. injury. The wrecked barque Cyrene held together^ wonderfully, though often lifted bodily by the rollers. The scene on the beach on Saturday was magnificent, such high seas were unprecedented here. -
