NEW PLYMOUTH.
ThUday. A letter signed "Bushranger" appeared in the Independent referring to peculiaritiei in the management of the defence at White Cliffs. The letter was noticed in a sub-leade* in the Independent of the 24th ultimo, and an inquiry was instituted by the Government, which resulted in bringing home the authorship to a man named Burke, wko acknowledged dictating it. He was taken prisoner, kept in the guard-room twentyfour hours, ami then summarily discharged and not allowed to stay in the camp. Burke says th« letter, sent to the Independent in confidence, was handed over to the Defence office, Wellington. The officer who dismissed hint", he says, told him so. This is Burkes statement.
