This Company has been formed for the purpose of Manufacturing Paper from Phormium Tenax and other New Zeland fibres. The great demand for rags in excess of the supply in the English Market has led to the use of Esparto grass, old ropes, straw, wood, and many other substances of inferior quality. Tho chief difficulty experienced by all paper manufacturers is that of obtaining supplies of fibrous materials of sufficient strength at a cheap rate. This Company will enjoy the advantage, possessed by no English manufacturer, of having an unlimited supply of a raw material which for strength and adaptability cannot be surpassed. The Provisional Directors, after much careful investigation, are fully satisfied that Phormium Tenax as a staple for the manufacture of paper is unequalled. Very large quantities of tow are now annually exported from this colony, and employed for that purpose. With the aid of gentlemen formerly engaged in the manufacture, estiinates^of the cost and erection of the necessary plant, and the expense of production, &c, have been prepared with great care. The Provisional Directors are confident that an article can be product far superior to any imported, at a much less cost, and after liberally allowing for contingencie, that large profits will accrue to the shareholders. The Provincial Government offer every facility for the selection of the requisite flax lands, and steps are being taken to obtain from the Gejieral Government an extension of time for the £2.000 bonus offered for tliis manufacture. The value of the Paper imported into the colony in 1872 was upwards of £40,000. It is believed the Company will be able to supply this demand, and produce a very large surplus, particularly of wrapping papers for exportation. It is estimated that the entire cost of the Plant will not exceed £15,000, and that not more than £2 pel share will be required. Application for shares to be made to the Secretary at 22, Exchange, Auckland, up to December 20th Five Shillings per Share to be paid on application, anc Five Shillings per Share on allotment. Further Call not exceeding Pive Shillings per Shire will be madi as required, twenty-eight days' notice being given. J. F. CLARK, Sec. pro tern. In a volume written by John Murray, P.S. A. F.L.S., kindly lent by T Kirk, Esq., to the Secretar of the Company, to be seen at bis office, printed o paper inp.de from the New Zealnnd Flax Leaf, w extract the following :—"Mr Smith, of Morton Pap. Mills, Yorkshire, the manufacturer of the Phormiui Tenax Paper, writes : ' You will observe the Paper very strong indeed, iv my own opinion nearly i durable as parchment itself of the same thicknes Had the raw material been hackled or cleaned previdi to manufacture I have no doubt but it would hal been equally strong, of a beautiful color, and a flrs rate Paper, more durable than anything ever seen the shape of Paper,' "
