This Company has been formed for the purpose of Manufacturing Paper from Phormium Tenax and other New Zeland iibres. The great demand for rags in excess of the supply in the English Market has led to the use of Esparto grass, old ropes, straw, wood, and many other substances of inferior quality. The chief difficulty experienced by all paper manufacturers is that of obtaining supplies of iibrous materials of sufficient strength at a cheap rate. This Company will enjoy the advantage, possessed by no English manufacturer, of having an unlimited supply of a raw material which for strength and adaptability cannot be surpassed. The Provisional Directors, after much careful investigation, are fully satisfied that Phormium Tenax as a staple for the manufacture of paper is unequalled. I Very large quantities of tow are now annually exported from this colony, and employed for that purpose. With the aid of gentlemen formerly engaged in the manufacture, cstimaiesjof the cost and erection of the necessary plant, and the expense of production, &c, have been prepared witli great care. The Provisional Directors are confident that an article can bo produci-d far superior to any imported, at a much less cost, and after liberally allowing for contingencie, that large profits Will accrue to the shareholders. j The Provincial Government offer ovnry facility for the selection of the requisite ilax lands, and steps are being taken to obtain from the General Government an extension of time for the £2.000 bonus offered for this manufacture. The' value of the Paper imported into the colony in 1872 was upwards of £40,000. It is believed the Company will be able to supply this demand, and produce a very large surplus, particularly of wrapping papers for exportation. It is estimated that the entire cost of the Plant will not exceed £15,000, and that not more than £2 per ' share will be required. Application for shares to be made to the Secretary, at 22, Exchange, Auckland, up to December 20th. Five Shillings per Share to be paid on application, and Five Shillings per Share on allotment. .Further Calls not exceeding Five Shillings per Shire will be made as required, twenty-eight days' notice being given. J. F. CLARK, Sec. pro teni. In a volume written by John Murray, F.S.A., F.L.S., kindly lent by T Kirk, Esq., to the Secretary of the Company, to be seen at his office, printed on paper made from the New Zealnnd Flax Leaf, we extract the following : —"Mr Smith, of Morton Paper Mills, Yorkshire, the manufacturer of the Phormium Tenax Paper, writes : ' You will observe the Paper is very strong inde°d, in my own opinion nearly as durable as parchment itself of the same thickness. Had the raw material been hackled or cleaned previous to manufacture I have no doubt but it would have been equally strong, of a beautiful color, and a firstrate Paper, more durable than anything ever seen in the shape of Paper.'" i
