This day. The day is glorioiis, with a little wind. Cabs met- us at the wharf when we arrived.
Three cheers were given for the Auckland team.
Booms had been engaged cat the Empire Hotel, and every courtesy was shewn. The wickets were prepared carefully, the turf being very good, close, but bad outfielding. There were about one thousand persons present, and great interest was manifested in the match, which was announced by placards in all directions.

The weather is splendid. The ground is in good order.
Auckland -n on the toss, and put Wellington in. The game commenced at 0.40.
Robinson started bowling Wood, who commenced receiving and playing steady. A maiden over was made.
Sweete was called to bowling at the other end. J. J. Salmon was receiving, and played a maiden over.
The first run was made by Wood, with a cut to slip. Sweete followed with another maidon. Wood hit Robinson's third ball to the off, and was well held by Yafces.
One wicket down for two runs. Evans cut the first ball to long slip for one.
Salmon hit one to slip for two runs off Sweete's over. Salmon hit one to off for two. Both men were bowling well on the ■wickets. Evans made a run off Sweete's first ball. Salmon was then bowled out clean. Two wickets down for eleven runs.
Jacobs slipped one with a Cambridge poke to centre, and Evans one. Robinson's first ball took Evans' bales for a total of 13. W. J. Salmon got a leg bye. Jacobs hit Sweete's ball for three, but Robinson's first ball took Jacobs' wicket.
Four wickets for 20 runs
Marchant cut the first ball into Mumford's hands at point, making five wickets for 20 runs.
Knapp was run out in trying for two. Six wickets for 27.
Auckland was fielding splendidly. Salmon hit R,obinson for a good two. He was playing steadily, but slipped Sweete's second hit into slip's hands (Lankham). Seven wickets for 29. Betts, a loft-hand player, sent the second to square leg for 1. Dees made a pretty hit from Robinson for 3.
Sweete's first ball took his centre stump, making eight down for 34 runs. Betts commenced hitting wildly, and was bowled out by Robinson's third ball ; 9 wickets for 35 runs. Sweete'a second ball bowled out Flanagan; 10 wickets for 35 runs, all the Wellington team being out. The following are the scores :— J. J. Total ... 35 The Auckland team then went to the wickets, Mumford and Bollars leading. Bellars drove Evans first ball for two, and the second to mid-wicket for one. After a few more balls Bellars skied one of Merchant's, which was caught by J. A. Salmon. One wicket down for ten runs. Dufaur took Bellar's place to Marchant's bowling, and commenced playing very carefully.
Two maidens followed in succession, and both batters appeared in good form. After a few runs Dufaur was stumped out by W. Salmon. Two wickets down for 18 runs. Mumford skied Evans' second and w&s caught by W. G. Salmon. Three wickets down for 21 runs. Alpe and King now occupied the wicketa. King hit to square leg for three. Evans' third ball took Alpe's wicket ; four wickets for twenty-five. RMarchant's second ball took King's wicket, the ball going in off his pad. Yates and Cotton succeeded the two last players. Yates hit Evans first for three, and Cotton wade hits for one and two, but in hitting wildly at Marchant's bales was beautifully stumped by W. J. Salmon. Six wickets for 33.
Robinson, who succeeded him, retired to Marchant's first ball. Seven wickets down for 33. Sweete followed Robinson and took Marchant's last ball which nearly took him. Yates hit Marchant's third straight for one.
Sweete held Merchant's next sending it Well over his head for two. Yates made the prettiest hit of the day forward for three. Evans's fourth ball took Sweete's wicket. Eight wickets for 42 runs, Auckland followed, and commenced by hitting Marchant to leg for three, and then dipped Evans for one. Flaunagan was caught at mid-wicket by Dufaur, bowled by liobinson. One wicket down and no runs. J. J. Salmon cut one mid-wicket for a single, and slipped a single off Eobinson. lie rose Sweete for a single, and skied one to off for two. Robinson's left hand was not to be trifled with, and Sweote put on the pace tremendous. J. J. Salmon hit one mid-wicket off Sweete and was run out.
Wood coming in stood up to liobinson, holding his third ball, and sending it to on for 2. -
J. A. Salmon got his first to square leg off Swecfcc, and tlieu two to mid-wicket. Wood covered point for 2. G. A. Salmon sent Sweetc to square leg for a .single. £ Sweete now gave way to'Buckland. Robinson put in a shooter, to which Wood succumbed. 3 wickets for 22 runs.
Salmon hit Robinson to leg for one. Evans slipped one and Salmon got a good two to square leg. The next ball took his wicket; four wickets for twenty-seven. Jacob's now took the bat. Three mairlons had now been bowled in succession by Buckland
Evans hit one to raid-wicket, which was cleverly run. Jacol)3 made a good hit to long stop for two, and slipped a single. Jacobs skied one, but Buckland missed the catch. Jacobs was run out. Five wickets for 34. Two byes were obtained off Eobinson. The fielding was very sharp. W. Salmon made a mcc slip for two. Evans gave a good cut for two, both were making a fine stand. W. Salmon hit for three off Robinson and Evans stole a run but had a narrow escape. Salmon made a splendid cut for one, followed by another. Sweeto was storjping in fine style. Salmon gave a swipe for two off Buckland, then for one. Evans followed with a cut for two. Salmon skied for two. Sweote and Lankham again began bowlling, the others getting slack, Salmon and Evans knocking them about anyhow. A hit to Salmon off Sweetc and a bye for two were obtained. Salmon gave the next a hit for one. The fielding was good. Salmon gave a magnificent off hit for four, and a beautiful slip to Evans. The Aucklanders seemed tired. The batters were aggravatingly cool. Two byes were run, and a run to Evans. Salmon cut for two off Lankham. Evans made the nicest cut of the day off Swecte, followed by a beautiful draw. Salmon then gave a hit for threo. The excitement became intense, and the hopes of Wellington increased. The score how stood at 80. Salmon sent a ball from Robinson amongst the people in the pavillion for two, and a hit to stop. Sweete's bowling was getting wide, three byes wci'e made. The Aucklandors wero evidently getting puzzled. Another change was made, Buckland sent to bowl, when Salmon was run out, after scoring 29. Six wickets down for BG.
