DECLARATION OF THE POLL
GRAHAMSTOWN. Yesterday, (Interrupted by stoppage on wire.) The Sons of Freedom are sending down quartz, and start crushing Avith ten head of stampers on Monday. They have a good show of gold. Point Russel Tribute.—3o tons stone yielded 125 ozs. 4 dwts. melted gold. Lord Nelson. —4 ozs. 10 dwts. gold were obtained from a trial crushing.
The Pumping Association will finish the air pipes to-day, arc! start driving towards Tookey's in the afternoon. Ten pounds more specimens have been obtained from the Watchman. 25 feet are still to drive to the boundary of the Windsor Castle.
Sales of Caledonians were made at £13 ss, £13 10s ; Crown Prince, paid up, 20s ; Black Angel, 25s Gd; Watchman, 7s Gd, 7s 9d, 8s; Lucknow, 3s Sd ; National Insurance, 21s, 20s 6d. Buyers : Crown Prince, paid up, 19s, contributing, 20s ; Black Angel, 2Gs ; National Insurance, 20s.
This day. The Consolation claim had a trial of 10 tons, which yielded lOoz 15dwt gold. Golden Crown. —One hundred and five tons stone rehired 2020z gold.
Kuranui. —The fortnight's crushing of 250 tons yielded 1470z gold. Waiotahi.—Fifty tons stone yielded 250z lOdwt gold. Moanatairi.—Three hundred tons crushed for this fortnight yielded 2670z 15dwt.
There is no improvement in the Caledonian. There is very little quartz in No. 4 winze, which is now down 62 feet.
The Morning Star intersected a fine lode a foot thick in the cross cut on the 150 feet level, from which 25 lbs of specimens were taken. They will open out as soon as the cross cut is sufficiently extended.
At the declaration of the poll, at the Court-bouse to-day, all the candidates were present except Messrs. Graham and C. F. Mitchell. There was a poor attendance. The Returning Officer declared the numbers:—John Brown, 730; Swan, 715 ; Carpenter, 599 ; Bagnall, 490 ;. O'Haire, 333; Hopcraft, 299; Mitchell, 237; Otto, 97 ; Leydon, 62 ; Graham, 3. The result of the scrutiny was to deduct for double voting—Swan, 1 ; Carpenter, 1 ; O'Haire, 5 ; Hopcraft,!s ; Graham, 1.
The four first were declared duly elected. The successful candidates thanked the electors.
Mr O'Haire spoke strongly of the unfair means used to defeat his election.
Messrs Hopcraft, Otto, and Leydon, spoke briefly.
In a match fired at Parawai this morning, five shots each side, the Sir George Grey Cadets licked the Thames by 18 points. Totals 221 and 203.
The ranges were one, two, and three hundred yards. At 100 yards Pratt and Hardwick made 20 each.
