The nomination of a candidate to serve in the Provincial Council for the electoral district of Takapuna took place at noon to-day in the Devonport Hall. Colonel Balneavis, the Returning Officer, having road the writ and election notice called upon any qualified elector to name a candidate.
Mr 11. Niccol came foiward saying he was about to propose a gentleman in whom they all had confidence ; a man^of abilit)% who would do credit to the district. He (Mr Niccol) was not aware whether there was going to bo any opposition ; but he hoped there would net, and that the country would not bo put to the unnecessary expense of a contest. The candidate he had to name was well known to them all —-Mr G. M. Heed— and he had great pleasure in proposing him as a fit and proper person to represent their interests in the Provincial Council.
H. J. Hawkins briefly seconded the nomination.
No other candidate being proposed, the Returning Officer declared George McCulloch Reed to be duly elected member for the district of Takapuna in the Provincial Council.
This announcement was received "vrith much cheering. Mr Reed then rose and said that he returned his most cordial thanks for the high honor they'had conferreduponhim by electing him without opposition as representative of the Takapuna electorate in the Provincial Council. It was needless for him to detain them by any lengthened statement of his political views. He had been engaged in doing this every day for the past four or five years, and they all knew what his sentiments on public questions were. He would therefore not detain them any longer, but would again heartily thank them for returning him without a contest, and would assure them that everything which he could do for the benefit of the district or the province he would earnestly strive to do it. He again sat down amid much, cheering. A vote of thanks to the Chairman, proposed by Mr P. J. Somerfield and carried by acclamation, terminated the proceedings.
