INTER-PROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH.
Auckland. Won First Innings
(FROM OUR SPECIAL RFPORTERJ
[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.]
CHRISTCHURCH
This day.
Contrary to expectations entertained at the time of depatching my message at half-past two yesterday the weather continued fine up to five o'clock, when rain came on and stopped the play.
The ground was in excellent order, and much disappointment was felt lest the wet should cause an unpleasant sloppiness in the field for a continuance of the match on the following day.
His Excellency the Governor and Lady Fergusson came on the ground at three o'clock, md evinced great interest in the match.
Mr Yogel was present, and promised two bats to the best bat and bowler of the Auckland team.
Christchurch was very confident of winning, and odds of two to one were freely offered at the commencement.
Affairs at first looked very black for the Auckland team. Mumford was caught at the wicket after scoring two. Shortly after Dufaur was very badly run out, it being entirely his own fault.
Alpe then went in and by steady play ran up seventeen, meanwhile Bellers was caught out by Ollivier on a splendid hit to long leg. Yates followed, playing well and looking fair for a long score, when he interposed his leg in the place of his bat, and had to retire.
Nothing remarkable occurred until Robinson came, and caused general admiration by his beautiful play.
The state of affairs begrn to look better.
Sweete's hitting powers were much respected. He only stayed three overs for ten runs, when he was bowled out by a trimmer from Fuller. He rr>"ie a splendid Ht for four.
Cotton and Buckland made good stands. The latter was most luckily thrown out by Cotterell while batting strongly. Lankham did not score. The innings closed for ninety, with only two as extras.
Christchurch sent in Ollivier and A. J. Cotterell to the bowling of Buckland and Rob;nson.
Twenty runs were scored and no wicket down. .
The prospect for Auckland looked gloomy. Swete then took Buckland's end, and a great change was at once observable. Cottere 1! was caught at point by Clayfoi th. He was bowled by Robinson. H. Cotterell and Corfe were both disposed of slick.
White, a trimmer from Robinson, took Fowler's off stump, and retired for five. The hopes of Auckland now began to rise as the Canterbury wickets fell in rapid succession, until the rain came on at five o'clock, and-put a stop to'the play. When the stumps were drawn there were seven -wickets down for a score of 53. I
Betting is now in favour of the Aucklanders, who are fielding well, and altogether shewing to great advantage. Robinson and Swete were well on the spot, and completely shewed the Crnterbury men that our team is stronger in bowling and weakest at batting. The follow ins: is the score :— AUCKLAND.
