SCHOOL TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION.

A meetimo of school teachers and scholars was held at the High School, Symond-street, this afternoon, the Uev. .Dr. Kitlcl in the chair. The following teachers were elected members of the Association :— Mr Forde (Bombay Settlement), Mrs Wright (City East), Miss Robertson (Grafton Road), and Miss Morley (I'arnell.) A sub-committee consisting of the Rev. Dr. Kidd and Messrs Martin, Edwards, Fraser, Harrison, Lenuard and Worthington was appointed to make the necessary arrangements for holding the annual general meeting in January 1874. Mr Martin, of Grafton road, went through an interesting " object lesson" with a class of children, who were asked to explain the nature and properties of a variety of common things used in everyday life. . Some of the answers given were very intelligent, and a fair knowledge of such matters as the nature and manufacture of sugar, the properties of milk, oats, hay, grass, &c. It is the intention of several members of the

Association to give specimen lessons m arithmetic, English, grammar «eo"ra»hv &c, at public meetings/ ' i [Left sitting 1

When a new member is elected to the Provincial Council he usually hss a volume of Provincial Acts put into his hands, many of which Acts have been repealed by others, or have lapsed, and if he wants to find any particular Act he has to hunt all, through the book, and with great difficulty perhaps finds what he wants, and then lie cannot be sure whether it is still law. Mr F. C. Leggett, the Clerk of the Council, has after expending considerable time and trouble, succeeded in compiling a list in alphabetical order of all. the Provincial, enactments which are in actual operation, omitting all defunct and repealed Acts, so that any member or other individual can see at a glance whore to look for any particular statute, and by a perusal of the list can tell what Provincial laws are now actually j n force. The little pamphlet w;H be in the hands of the publisher imme iiately, and will be ready for the next meeting of the Council. Copies will be sold at a. very rraall price, and every member, every lawyer, and every elector of the province should have one in his possession.

The facetious paragrapbist of a contemporary will be pleosed to know1 that Mr Stewart, the chairman of the Ponsoaby District Board, hns advertised for tenders for the erection of a basement for the long-neglected Jamp to be pHoed at the junction of Ponsonby, College, and Mount St. Mary roads. Extra light, therefore, ■vvi" shoi l;ly be ibrov. a upon the path of travellers to l> hvood.

The nomination for Coromandel took place to-day, and the result will be found amongst our telegrams. Of the two in the field—Mr Cadmau and Mr Gr. McLcod—the former i.s apparently the favourite. The last represented Coromaudel ever since it was created a .separate electoral district, and for a long time sat for the Noiihein Division. On the occasion of bis return for Coromandel in the days of open voting there was a tight contest between Mm and Mr Daniel Tookey, who pol'cd v, ..thin a few votes of his successful rivr 1. A lively light took place in front of the Court-house, in. which Mr Mackay and others got roughly handled. An inqirry was subsequently held before Mr Backhand, R.M., as to the mode ; i which the then Returning Officer and his deputy c i:sch?rged their duties, but after the expenditure of considerable time, trouble ?id expense, nothing practical arose out of the inquiry. On this occasion, under the bsOlot, everything ■n.'U probably be conducted quietly at the po 1! on Monday.

The respectable cluster of Good Templars who nestle once a week m the recently formed Lodge in that highly suggestive locality, lOdon Terrace, held an open Lodge meeting last evening, when Messrs Spragg, Waite, Edwards, and JI emus delivered very interesting speeches on the subjects of abstinence and moral progress. Alias I'robert played a very sweet solo, " Say a kind word when you can," in a very pleasing and effective style, The chorus was sung by a select choir, and taken up apparently with much heartiness by every one in the room. .Mr Brown, the ladge chaplain, concluded the proceedings with prayer.

A requisition is in course of signature among the electors of Auckland City West to Messrs Boylan, Swanson, Macready, Dignan, and .Prime, asking them to come forward again as representatives of that district. It has been stated on good authority that Mr Swaußon will not seek re-election. Mi- J. P. M. Grace's name lias been mentioned in connection with this constituency and before nomination day other candidates will likely come out, so that the electors will have plenty to choose from.

To the Editor : Sir, —1 am glad to hear that the Arti.H.ery are at last to be permitted to fire for the two years General Government prize money now in hand, and that they on the same occasion lire for the £10 10s so kindly and long ago presented by Doctor Lee. It is a matter of regret that those prizes were not shot for last summer when the battery was i-i its strength, and not put oil' from time to time on groundless excuses from the captain, one of which was that the Harbor Master refused pciiirssion. This, 1 am informed, he never refused (except on holidays), nor would he put any obstacle in the way; but f suppose the real cause is best known to Captain Featon, and possibly has Lome-thing to do with the doctor's prize, long since handed by him to the captain in the shape of a cheque. It is to bo loped, however, that' this filing, which lias so long been a bone to contention, w^l do much towards rewving the drooping spirit of this disheartened and badly-treated corps, but I am afraid nothing can be done to restore confidence in their captain. However the day may come when lie v, ill have the good feeling to resigu the command of the corps in which he seems so unpopular, or that the Govern me nt may see the necessity of removing him, and thus restore to its former strength and efficiency, which effect this, if taken by the Government, would certainly have.—l am, &c, Linstock.

The nomination for the electoral distiicts of the Thames, Eden, aud Waikato takes place on Monday. Wehave already published the names of the candidates, of whom there is no scarcity. For the four scats at the Thames there w' 1' be a stiff contest. Only one of the old members comes out again Mr Swan—and it is s?ul that a very "strong effort will be made to keep him out iv the cold this time, with what success remains to be seen. That out of the lot Messrs O'Haire and Brown will be returned seems quite on the cards, but who the other two w. 1 be it is hard to say. Mr E. Wayte intimates* to the general public that he is the sole agent in Auckland for the celebrated " Letts' Diaries;" and also, that instead of waiting for '' iirst shipment by Chile, daily expected," that Ins stock for 1574 has arrived, and is on sale at his warehouses. Diaries of all sizes aid at all prices.

The members of the Auckland Regatta Club met last irght in the Club-room at the Thames Hotel, passed the balance -sheet, and elected officers for the commg year. Mr Yon der Ekyde was called to the chair, and regretted that as the minute-book aud other papers belonging to the club had been destroyed by the late fire, that the minutes of the last meeting could not be read. The balance-sheet showed that subscriptions had been collected by Capt. Mackenzie, Messrs Henderson, Cruickshauk, Ellis, Stodart, Fletcher, Niccol, Grattan, Nathan.and Waymouth; and for entries, amounting to £222 5s Gd • and that the disbursements for prizes &c ' amounted to £ISG lGs Id, leaving a balance of £3o 9s 5d in favour of the club. The following oflicers and committee were then appointed :—Patron, his Excellency the Governor ; President, the Chairman of the Harbour Board ; Vice-Presidents, D. Nathan and T. Henderson, sen , Esqs. : Treasurer, James Dacre, Esq. ; Hon. Sec T Henderson, jun., Esq. j Umpire, Captain L>. a. McKenzie ; Auditors, Messrs D B Cruiekshank and G. H. Fletcher ; Starter' Captain Anderson ; Committee, Captain McKenzie, Messrs T. Henderson, iun., H J. Elhs, M Niccol, G, Yon der Hoyde, I l' Niccol, R. Grattan, H. Brett, J. Dickson, D.' Uxley, J. A vote of thanks having been passed to the Chairman, the I meeting separated, i

The Royal Exhibition was well attended yesterday, and the concert in the evening assisted greatly to enhance the amusements of the hall. The melodies of Mrs and Miss Gourlay Avere charmingly rendered md elicited frequent applaucs.
