Writing to order our contemporary the Cross to-day essays to act as a sorb of buffer between an indignant public and the provisional directors of the National ] nsurance Company. The writer waits for "fuller evidence" before denouncing, and then Wo presume will " denounce" only to such a ll extent as will be considered safe by his directors. The logic of the article in question is of the quality called "greasy," and it affords a very striking illustration of what Mr Stannus Jones called "twaddle." Auckland applicants are "moderated" by the consideration that it is in consequence of oiu- fireraising proclivities they were not entrusted with more shares j and although the writer waits for "fuller evidence," he hay sufficient to assort that " the accusation that the directors delayed the announcement in order to sccuro additional shares and sell out at a profit, or that they have been dealing with shares, — this, we arc informed, *s utterly without foundation." Yetit is afact that the directors delayed the announcement, that they secured additional shares, that they have been dealing with shares, and that shares were for sale in Auckland before allotment was known in Auckland, and all the greasy logic ordered by the CVo.v.v directors will not prercnt people from connecting effects and causes. We think if the National Insurance directors can find no better advocacy than the soapee soapco in this morning's Cross, they had better put their hands on their mouths and shut up.
