AUCKLAND ANNUAL REGATTA.
Eveet arrangement is being made by the Regatta Committee to make the forthcoming Regatta on Monday next a greater success than previous years. There is, however, a lack of subscriptions from the public, and without sufficient funds the committee have their hands tied. It is to be hoped that friends will kindly respond to the appeal, and swell the subscription lists with their names, and the treasury of the committee with their donations. The distances for the various races (with one or two exceptions, which will depend on the weather) have been fixed, and a full programme published. The charge for jadmission to the end of the wharf will be one shilling, and, considering the safety of the public, this is a wise precaution—it will prevent undue crowding and risks of submersion from over anxiety of people to see the sports. We understand that the commander of H. M. S. Blanche has written to the Regatta Committee, and placed that vessel at their disposal as a flagship, offering at the same time to provide lunch for 300 visitors. This praiseworthy offer has been however declined, as considering they are about to let the right of charging for admission to the end of the wharf, it would not be fair to the successful tenderer to compete with him by charging for admission to the flagship. Every morning and evening various crews are to be seen in active training on the river. It is to be hoped the weather will prove favorable this year.
