A "TRIFLING COST."
To the Editor of the Evening Stab. Sic, —" 'Tis but twenty shillings a year." It cannot mean twenty shillings a year for all the closets that are in Auckland; therefore I presume it means twenty shillings per year for each closet; all houses, must have one, I think 4,000 not too ijiany. £4000 yearly is a pretty good " 'tia'Sut," and its trifling cost is so much lc/. 3 ;its twin brother, the " poll tax," equally alike rich and poor, one pound each, that it must commend itself. Of course such a thing could not happen in Auckland, but "of course people will talk." I am, &c,
[Our correspondent reveals his thoughts darkly. We think he refers to Higgin'g patent deodorizing and disinfectant clo3et, a3 commended hy us in a recent article. But- it is a question if earth closets could be kept and their contents removed at a leas sum annually even if equally efficacious, which we believe they are not. The present abominations must be suppressed at any cost, and even a " poll tax" of 203. per head of a family would bo better than to have the city decimated by a pestilence. —Ed. JE. S.~]
