POLICE COURT.

THIS DAY. Before His Worship the Mayor and J Holt, Esq, J.P. DBUNKENNESS Three men wore fined ten shillings and costs for getting drunk. AUCKLAND PLAGUE SPOTS. Ellen Mahoney pleaded not guilty to having no visible lawful means of support. Sergeant Walker deposed to prisoner having to his own otrtai nknowledge been a prostitute for the past twelve months. He took her out of a brothel at twelve o'clock last night. Had not seen her in the house before, and simply apprehended her because she came into the house while he was there.

Sergeant Pardy, in the absence of Detectives Jeffery and Ternahan (who were at the Supreme Court, deposed that frequent complaints had been made against the house *ra which she was found, and also against the prisoner, ho had seen her about the streets frequently, following a life of prostitution, She had formerly lived in Edwards street, at a houso of ill repute, She was charged at this court with drunkenness a few days ago, The prisoner was sentenced to seven days imprisonment. Kate McManus, another unfortunate, was then charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, with having no lawful visible mean 3of support, and with having been previously convicted as an idle and disorderly person. She pleaded guilty of being a vagabond, but denied that she was a rogue. Sentenced to six months' imprisonment, with hard labour ; and, in consequence of her improper behaviour in the dock, orderod to be removed immediately to the cells. Mary Storey, another unfortunate, similarly charged, put in the same plea as the former prisoner. Sergeant Pardy explained that he did not wish to pross for a heavy punishment in this case, as the prisoner had only recently come into town from Onehunga. The Court discharged her, on condition that she returned to her home forthwith. Michael Burke was then charged with being the occupier of a houso in Mills' Lane, which is frequented by persons who have no lawful visible means of support. Sergeant Pardy applied for an adjournment in this case in consequenco of the detectives being engaged at the Supreme Cout. The prisoner informed the Court that h« held a license from the Corporation to conduct his house as a boarding house. He appealed to the Mayor whether he had not given him such a license. The case was adjourned until to-mor-row, the prisoner being admitted to bail. EVADING THE TOLL. A charge against W E Thompson, preferred by W Galbraith, for evading the payment of threepence toll at the Newmarket Turnpike on each of the 10th and 11th days of January, was adjourned by consent until to-morrow.
