THE VOLUNTEER CHRONICLE.
W.e have been shown some exceedingly neat specimens of braziers' art, in shape of ornamental mountings for the new helmets of the Prince Alfred Light Horse. To Mr Worfolk, of Shortland Crescent, is due the credit of their manufacture. They are to be electro-plated by Mr E H Featon. The helmets arc in course of completion, aud certainly look infinitely better than the top-heavy chimney cowls recently decorating the heads of tie horsemen;
There was to have been shot and shell practice this morning from Fort Britomart, but when the Volunteer Artillery asscmblcd_ it was found impossible to proceed with the business. Several small craft were between the battery and the target, and HMS Blanche also lay in tho line of fire, with her broad-side.bearing directly on the ricketty old fort. It was therefore considered inadvisable to irritate her by dropping fragments of shells on the deck, and the parade was dismissed without anything having been done. \ A further reason for postponing the parade was that no decision had been given v the ease brought by Judge Fenton agsLw'i the Volunteer authorities for disturbing his rest, by the discharge of great guns from Fort Britomart.
