THE MONSTER MEETING.
To the Editor of the Evening Stae. Sib, —After all the monster meeting and the great talk about Mr Philips, onr worthy mayor, I think it is but the duty of some citizen to take notice of the language that was used by "the peoples' champion " towards another Mr Philips, who, although he is not a Mayor, is an honest man, —one who has to work hard for an honest living,—one who, according to his means, is ever ready to assist the distressed. Therefore, the language made use of at that meeting by Mr Staines is not what should have been done by him to an honest man. I consider that the words "that dirty blackguard " are most untrue, offensive, and damaging to his character ; and, although Mr Staines said he would "scout that fellow," he was quite as good as, if not better than, the speaker. The least thing that Mr Staines can do will be to recover his senses, and then apologise to the low dirty blackguard.
