RIFLE MATCH.
A eifle match between ten members of No 2 and ten of No 3 Company Auckland Eifle Brigade took place on Saturday afternoon at the Eange, Mount Eden. The scoring was not so good as might be expected; this was probably owing to the strong wind prevailing at the time. The ranges were 200, 400, and 500 yards, five shots at each range. Captain Yon der Heyde and Lieut. Matthews of No 2 company and Lieut. Harrison of No 3 company were present. The result was in favour of No 2 company by 29 points. The total scores are as follows. —■ No. 2 265 points. No. 3 236 points. The prize consisted of a barrel of ammunition. We understand that another match will be arranged between the two companies shortly.
A special meeting of the No 3 Company Eifle Brigade, will be held to-morrow evening, at the Belfast Hot.l, at 8 o'clock. There is important business to transact.
Battery drill of the members of No 1 Company, Naval Volunteers, will take place at half-past six every Tuesday morning, at Fort Britomart.
We peiceive that Colonel Harington, the Inspecting Field Officer of Militia and Volunteers, arrived from the South yesterday by the Taranaki. The class firing of volunteers will terminate with the year. Members of the various corps osght therefore to lose no time in qualifying themselves. The members of No. 5 Company are informed in another column that their usual weekly parade will be held on Thursday evening instead of Tuesdays. The alteration is made in consequence of the members having to attend the class firing on Tuesday morning. The cadets belonging to the company will also parade on Tuesday at 5 a.m., and Thursdays at 7 p.m., until further notice.
Members of the Auckland Eifie Brigade who desire to furnish company representatives, have received instructions to assemble at the rifle range at either 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. to-morrow.
The Artillery Band performed on Saturday afternoon in the Barrack Square. A very good selection of music was well played, although we detected considerable weakness in the intermediate parts. This, however, may well be attributed to the t ■ jiulty which the men find in attending o__ _aturday*afternoons, and will probably be remedied when early closing becomes the order of the day.
