To the Editor of the Even-ing Stab. Sic, —With reference to a letter which appeared in your issue of last evening, where my name is most unwarrantably dragged before the public, by' some (at least to me) unknown pedlar or hawker. In would esteem it a favor if, through your issue of this evening, you will permit me to disclaim all knowledge of the transaction. I have no doubt it is a case of mistaken identity, in which the pedlar has " awakened the wrong man:" But, sir, I think that before you open your columns to attacks upon old and well known residents, especially when made by unknown person, such as the pedlar to. question, who is evidently crazy, you would do well to inform yourself of the merits of the case when practicable, as in the present instance. I am, &c, Chas. Canning. [We expressed our unbelief in the statement; but we think the columns of the press should be open to all complaints. —Ed. E.S.]
