PUBLIC OPINION.
To the Editor of the EvEsiNG Stab. Sir, —Many people aro ala loss to know why the passages in the Government Buildings, Shortland-street, are now closed. Every one knows that they were designed for public convenience, and as a right of way to both streets. .„.-. -. Asking for information from your wellknown bureau, the following opinions are hazaided, hoping no occult influence will prevent reply. lstj Is it po.-'ib'o. that .our worthy Superintendent and his noble army of Solous and Daniels would be disturbed hy_the profamm vultjus passing between the wind arid their nobility? - . 2nd. Is it because the eye to business hkes the traffic to be bobbing around the auction niart or' marts, carrying either purse or scrip, to the receipt of Customs (P) direct? 3rd; Is it because tbe people have made, would make, and could net be prevented from making bad use of' the privilege, otherwise right, which our parental tight-laced Go; vernment grants, and in a fit of blue forbids r 4th. Surely ib is because the demonstrations of applause and awe would unnerve the stupendous aggregate of genius which gently sleeps aud sweetly dreams in that pile, under which public opinion should walk,! run, or crawl. Isn't it, sir? *v *• sth. Would the powers that be, who only read the Stab, make a bright particular post facto resolve to open their gates again'for. us at reasonable times, asking them first as a favour what their ref-sal may eventuate in conceding as a right? VIATOB.
