MOUNT EDEN RIFLE RANGE.
The sharp shooters of Auckland have for a long time been groaning under the infliction of hard work imposed on them in marching all the way to Point Chevalier, live miles off, when they desired to practice ; aud tho bat success which our riflemen have hitherto bad iv their contests with tho men of the South has not without reason been attributed to the defective arrangements for taking progressive lessons in the use of the rifle—that weapon which has taken the place of the bows used by our forefathers. But there will no longer be any excuse, fur inferiority in I bo use of this terrible arm, for the Mount Eden range has now been completed, and the work has been done in a manner, caloulated' to satisfy the most cxigeant Volunteer. For distances up lo 600 yards, no better range can be found in the colonies. The sun is all day in the rear of the marksmen, and the butis are backed by the n rreat d_.rk mound of the cone of Mount Eden. If, therefore, our men cannot make high scores, they ought to retire from the ranks, 'the arrangements have been all well made, and a marker will be always on the ground, and will be responsible for everything that may happen. Tue days and hours for practice of the different corps have been well arranged, and the whole of the particulars may be seen on reference to our advertising columns. Wo hope that these increased facilities for practice will result in our riflemen taking the stand they ought to ocupy as the defenders of the province most exposed to danger.
