J. C. PATTESON.

Ob. Sep., MDCCCLXXL In Memorial*. He fell where the brave should fall, On the field of victory won : Not in the scene of peaceful rest, Not in the home, by friends caressed, Pillowed to sleep oil the. lov.ng breast, But the field where his work was done. He sleeps where, the brave should sleep: He has found a worthy grave : Not where the mourniug cypiess grows. Not where tho churchyard givc3 repose; But from earthly toil and earthly woes, He has rest beneath the wave. Mourn not the martyr's fateMourn not the spirit fled : He yearned for the isles of ocean wide, On the wave he lived, on the wave he died; And sung by the winds and rolling tide Is the requiem of tho dead. In love he left his hone— In love he died to save; Not his the hopes of earthly gains, Pure were hi* hands from slavers' stains, Seeking to free from heathen chain 3, He found the martyr's gravo. Sheathed be the vengeful sword ! Hushed be the cannon's roar ! Not to destroy, he lived to save, His voice now pleads from beyond the gravo That the peaceful gospel banner wave O'er the blood-stained coral shore. Beneath the palm tree's shade, : 'Mid the sound of tho surging tide, Tho grey-haired sire in other days To listening throngs shall tell his praise. And children, hushed and reverent, gazo On the scene where the martyr died. He fell where the brave should fall, On the Held of victory won : Not iv the scene of peaceful rest, Not in the home, by friends caressed, Pillowed to sleep on the loving breast, But the field where his work was done.
