t\ISTEICT ORDERS. Militia and Volunteer Office, Auckland, November 10,1871. The Officer Commanding the District takes the earliest opportunity of recording and publishing in District Orders his approbation of the manner in which the Brigade manoeuvres of yesterday were performed by every b.-anch of the Volunteer Force. The "march past" of the several Corps v.as almost unexceptionable, indeed, that of the Engineers and the two Companies Grammar School Cadets was quite so. The field movements were admirably executed, and reflect the greatest credit, as well upon the Office.-s Commanding Troops, Companies, and Battalions, as upon the Non-commissioned Officers and Rank and File. . , The Ca,dets of the District deserve especial praise for their steadiness and soldier-like bearirg on this their first field-day. The Battery of Artillery likewise claim , favourable remark for the quiet and orderly manner in which all orders were anticipated, and its field guns invariably found in their proper positions, at the proper moment. -■ There were, however, brought under the observation of the Commanding Officer two points, and two only, i during the proceedings of yesterday, to which he feels I assured he has but to direct the attention of Officers commanding Troops and Companies, which are, fl-stly, that roanv of their men require careful instruction in the Platoon exercise, and, secondly, they permit their men, in many instances, to wear their chinstraps on the back of their heads instead of in the proper place. These defects, however, were observed to exist chiefly in connection with those who may be termed Sedentary Volunteers-men who (and their number is unfortunately large), exhibit themselves on parade on rare and exceptional occasions only, and, therefore, detract very much from the steadiness and smart appearance of those who are habitually present. On the whole, however, the Commanding Officer congratulates the Volunteer Force of the District on its present serviceable and very creditable appearance for which all ranks are entitled, by their exertions, attention to drill, and submission to discipline, to eveir commendation.
