" An anecdote that is too good to be lost is told," says the Advertiser, "ofa cler yman well known in G-eelong, who hails from that land north ef the Tweed where ' bawbeeB1 are estimated at their full value. A day or two ago, this worthy divine was inspecting a new manse, intended for his own accommodation, and his thoughts being evidently absorbed by the costliness of the undertaking, he remarked to the workmen ' I'm surprised at your exorbitant wages, you demand Bs. and 10s. aday here, while in the old country I could get as good tradesman for 3s. and 45." 'Aye,' promptly replied one of the masons, lifting his eyes for a moment from his chisel and mallet, and speaking in a broad Caledonian accent not to be misunderstood, 'and in Scotland they can get plenty o' clever ministers to preach for twa hunuer punds a year; what think ye o' that, mon' ? It is needless to add that the clergyman, turning his back on an audience of faces lighted up with a sardonic grin, walked away iv silence."
During the recent engagement of Mr. and M7B. Barney Williams, in Philadelphia, a woman, with an infant, attended one of the performances. The baby kept up an incessant cry. At the end of the pLty, Mr. Williams was called before the curtain. The baby was bawling lustily. Mr. Williams looked round for a moment, and then said :—" Sure there's a nurse wanted." A roar of laughter followed. When the mirth had suosided, the woman with the infant rose and replied :—" No Irish need apply." There was a tremendous burst of applause, amid which the woman with the musical baby triumphantly retired. A sailor, whose sweetheart had a very handsome set of loetb, attempted to kiss her, but she eluded him|and gave him a box on the ear. " Just my luck," said the good-natured aailor; "I'm always getting wrecked on the coral reefs."
