FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1871.
We i»3 glad-v> find the existence in our raidsfc of two frienffly societies of a very unpretentious but benen^nt kind—" The Auckland Clothes Club," antit ß sister institution, "The Auckland Boot Ci,b" The objects contemplated are of the humblest kind, namely, by weekly subscription of 2s 6d in the one case, and Is in the othei.to provide clothing and boots for the mem^rs, But the effects of such societies are no- to be measured by tho direct results of their aerations ; and every such movement is deser^,™ of the warmest encouragement for the morq influence exercised on the sentiments and habits of the members. In another column it will be seen that the next meeting—which is, we are told, about the tenth—will be held on Monday evening next.

The entertainment' given last evening b the Excelsior Minstrels was by no means s well attended as from its great merits it dt served to be; but this may be attributed <-, t:o groat counter-attraction of Mr. Jone. bony fit at the theatre. This evening nn oil tirely new selection will be performed, and w have no doubt the City Hal] will be belfce :ittmded. The manner in which the Priuce of Walei Theatre was crowded last evening must huvv afforded pleasing proof to Mr. B. S. ] >rvqs o' the high estimation in which he is hold. Tin house was filled in every part. All tbt highest talent in the city had gi?en thcii assistance, and two favourite comedie3 wore' performed with the utmost success. Tomorrow evening, Mr. Ryan, also deservedly v favorite, will take his benefit, on which occasion Miss Colville and Mr. Hoskins have^ liberally volunteered their services. "We can assure our readers that the Excelsior Minstrels now performing at the City Ball are really excellent. There is nothing that could offend the most fastidious or sensitive; and the musical and generally entertaining abilities of tho company are of the highest order. We are told there is something specially racy for to-night.
Look out for the rich and racy local hits in the " G-bost in a Pawn Shop," American Minstrels, this evening.—[Advt.]
The noise outside the Police Court building used to be quite sufficient in itself to compel the suspension of business oven' now and then ; but since the commencement-, of the increased traffic up and down stairs, occasioned by the removal to the building of other public offices, the nuisance h>v» oocoaio—immensely intensified, and reporters ou the side of the Court-room, opposite to the witnoss-box are compelled to guess at half the proceedings and judge as to what is Bftid by the conformation of tho lips of Ihe speakers, as deaf people are said to-do. A few yards of coir-matting would remedy tho evil in so far as the within-door sounds ore concerned ; and the rumbling and crashing of drays along the narrow street might, be easily deadened by throwing down a few loads of stuff from the tanpits. Plenty may bo goi within a reasonable distance for the cost o'J
carriage,
