[Before Thomas Bcckhain Esq., X.M.] Dkunknness.—One person was fined as usual for a first offence; and James Ferguson, who has been convicted on three previous occasions, was ordered to be imprisoned for] seven days with hard labour. THE LIBEL CASE. Libel.—G-eorgeMcOullagh Reed arid Henry Brett, proprietors of the Evening Star newspaper, were charged by John Ward Taylor with publishing a false and defamatory libel on the 13th instant, purposing to bo a letter from one " Dick" to " Nathaniel Beeswing, Esq." A similar action was also broughtaguinst the same parties by John Stewart ■Reid." Mr. Maekecbnie, on behalf of prosecutors,,applied for »n adjournment until next day, on account of the unavoidable absence, of Mr. O'Brien, the Registrar of the Supreme Court, whose testimony was essential ; and, for the same reason, defendants, by I heir advocate, Mr. Beveridge, wished it postponed till Saturday. *fter a considerable amount of discussion, the hearing of tho cases was postponed until next Thursday, it being considered advisable that the Resident Magistrate should adjudicate on them.
