DEATH OF MR. ARTHUR.
A geneeal feeling of regret has been experienced in the city this morning, at the intelligence of tho death of Mr. Carpenter Arthur, the senior partner in the firm of Messrs. Arthur and Son. The deceased gentleman might be regarded as an old colonist, having arrived thirteen years ago, and was universally ostecme:) nnd respected by all witli whom he cam in contact. Having originally followed the business ot accountant and commission agent, during which period lie took a o'ee'p interest in the development of various local enterprises, ho had subsequently, iv conjunction with his son, carried oi a» extensive auctioneering business in Qaefcustreet; but his commercial avocatiots .did not so absorb las attention as to prevent him from hiking a leading part in the v;iriou< religious movements in connection with the denomination to whiot he belonged. Mr. Arthur wns one ofthe most esteemed local preachers nnd chu^-leadern of Elm Wesleyan connexion in this city ; and that deuoniiuatipu will fee) the loss of a sincere and faithful labourer, whosr gentle and. kindly bearing and private Christian clinracter, perhaps1 as much us his more public ministrutiorw commended practical religion by showing its influence in daily life. The deceased gentleman was in his :sixt3'-fdurth yiar, and, for the past three 3'ears, has hem from time to time luid nside from woik by the ailment under ,nhicli; lie has at last succumbed It appears that Mr. Arthur was afflicted with enlargement of the heart, of which he was not aware till H'ithin the past few months. He had been for aome time confined to his room at his residence, City Road, where ho died this morning about six o'clock j and it will be consolatory not only to his large family, but to all tliose who have known the life and character of the late MX Arthur, to lenrri that his last hours were in conformity with his life, exhibiting the resignation and peace of one who had hetiril the " Well done, good and faithful servant."
