THE NEW THEATRE.

All admirers of the drama in Auckland will be glad to hear that great interest appears to be taken in the projected new theatre. It is felt that, without reflecting ou ihe two theatres at present in the city, the time has come when the pretensions of Auckland demand something more capable of presenting the creations of the dramatic art with, all the requisite accessories. We believe that there has been sufficient to indicate that the money,- which, or, rather, the absence of which usually constitutes the main difficulty, will be readily forthcoming, and thut the scheme require* only to be launched to secure the requisite number of shareholders. But in connection with this project wereally do not see "wliy a new building should be erected when the City Hall is available. With certain alterations tliis building could be transformed into a most commodious and beautiful theatre, nnd we do not doubt thut it'miyht bo purchased at a cost much lower than the lowest at which a similar building could be erected. The situation is everything that could be desired In the main street, it is removed from its more crowded parts. ' The building is a most excellent one, and capable, we .should think, of supplying, the very thing required as the skeleton of the new theatre. That,a new theatre, ;.is required, will be readily admitted ; and though if the new company choose to launch out cash with out limit, anything"'Can be obtained that money can buy, yet the City. Jl all, trans formed into a theatre, with its " vestibule," &o.) could creditably reproduce in a manner ■ suited. to our population and requirements?, all tlio excellencies of the Theatre Uoyal in Melbourne.^.
