" For the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance,,. And the good that'we can do."
We beg to advise our friends and supporters when intending to purchase our papers from the run boys, to observe if it is the Stab they are receiving. We have found that the runners of our contemporary, the News, have during all the week been in the habit of posting themselves among the crowd around the door of our office, when our paper comes out, and thus disposing of the News to those who suppose that they are purchasing the Stab. The ruse would not be a creditable one, if done by instructions, but, we feel confident that the lads do it on their own responsibility, and boys will be boyi.
We observe that ugly-looking mound in Vincent-street, adjoining Cook-street, is being exc.vated by the Borough Council. When (hi; work is completed it will most certainly add very greatly lo tho appearance of that ..tivel, whijh lias lately undergone formation and gravelling. The residents in that, locality will have the pleasure of seeing their properties greatly enhanced thereby. Similar improvements in other streets are greatly required. Last evening the Rev. J. Berry delivered an interesting and highly-instructive lecture in the Pitt-street, school-room on "Sketches of Character from Early Methodist. History." There was an excellent attendance,"and the audience testified their Appreciation by several bursts of applause during the lecture. The choir gave a few selections of music, which they nad prepared for the occasion, which gave good effect to the wkolo proceedings. The lecturer, at the close of the meeting;, received a hearty vote of thanks. Wo understand that the proceeds of this course of lectures is to be devoted to the '•purchase of music, &c, for the choir.
' The high reputation Olson's tomato sauce has obtained as a household condiment, has 'brought many inferior articles into the market The public are therefore warned not to be imposed upon -with rubbish, but ask for Olson s genuine tomato sauce, and see that his name is on the-bottle.—[Advt.] _» ■_■;
We have received from the agent of Mr. Wise, of Dunedin, a circular as to! his Directory of New Zealand, which is to be published early in January. A. similar work was issued, we believe, by a Melbourne firm some five or six years back ; but the great changes amongst the important centres of population and commerce seem to warrant support to a new work of the kind. We are informed that the professional and mercantile firms of Dunedin, although annually supplied with a local Directory, have so expressed their desire for more extended information of the like character as to induce Mr. Wise to undertake the production of a Colonial Directory. Tne reasons which affect the professions or commerce of Otngo must, we imagine, apply here, and we hope Mr. Wise's representative may be well received j and, as he expresses it, " prompt facility jjiven him in the carrying out of his work, which includes collecting the necessary in forma ion, obtaining advertise inetits, and orders for copies."
