THE PERMISSIVE PRINCIPLE.
A public meeting was held last night in the Half of the Mechanics' Institute, convened by the Mayor on requisition, for the purpose of considering questions affecting the liquor traffic. The Mayor presided, and there was a largo and enthusiastio attendance. Resolutions deploring the prevalence of drinking customs, asking for a colonial permissive measure, for having the votes under it taken by Government officers, and for forwarding a petition to this effect to- the Assembly, were carried unanimously. Tbe speakers on the occasion were Eev. Mr. Edger, Captain Peek, Dr. Nicholson, Messrs. T. B. Hill, J. Sheehan, Dr. Rayner, Mr. Mason, and-Mr. Staines. The meeting was an exceedingly, successful one.
