The Evening Star.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1871.

" For the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance,,And the good that we can do."

"We would draw attention to an alteration in to-morrow's departure of the Golden Crown. Shi makes two nips to the Thames, starting from Auckland at nine in the morning and again at five in the afternoon. She will make a trip from the Thames to Auckland on Sunday morning, returning for Auckland on Sunday evening.

We have been requested to acknowledge the receipt of the following subscriptions towards tbe Auckland Women's Home, since May last i—Part proceeds of a concert, £4 165.; Miss Hull, £1; Capt. Rough, £2 25.; Mrs. Reader Wood, £1 j Mrs. Lush, £1 ; Mrs. Dixon, £1; a lady, by J. W. 8., £3 ; Mrs. W. White, £3 ; Dr. Day, £1; Mrs. J. E. White, £1 j T. L. W.,'£V_ Mrs. White's box, £2; ■mall sums, 10s.; Rev. J. Kinder, £5 ; Mrs. Sinclair, £2 _ Mrs. John Hay, £1; Mrs. Kenny, £1. Collected by Geo. Thome, Esq., jiiri.j and Mr. Dudley: J. L. Q., £1 Is.; Major George, £1; Mr. Upton,-10s } Dr.'Kenderdine, 13 (donation to building land, £2, annual subscription, £1). Some £30 or £40 more at least is required before the committee will have enough tnoney in hand to justify them in beginning to build; and they feel they ought to have Something in hand to commence operations With when the building is erected. There is, however, a tolerable list of annual subscribers, —sufficient to encourage the promoters to go on with the work, so soon as they see their way to put up the building and furnish it plainly, Without incurring debt. Will those who approve of this undertaking, but have not yet contributed, ..kindly come forward ? "He gives twice who gives quickly." The cases that have of late been brought before our tesident magistrate afford ample evidence of the necessity for the immediate establishment of such un institution as this. It is a crying want. Subscriptions and donations will be thankfully received by the treasurer, Mrs. J. Kinder jby any of the clergy; or may be paid to the Auckland Women's Home account, Bank of Australasia, Shortland-street.

S. and J. R. Vaile's drapery establishment Will be closed this day, and on Friday, and will be re-opened on Saturday, the 16th instant.— [Advt/]

An accident happened to a little boy named Barnes, yesterday afternoon, by which lus ancle was broken. The Circus van was being driven up Wakofield-street, with the music playing, and in front of the van a horse was being ridden by one of the company. When near Abercrombie-street the little fellow ran across the road in front of the horse, which placed one of its feet upon his ancle and broke it. He was at once removed to his mother's house in Abercrombie-street, where tho injury was attended to by Dr. Hooper.

The Union Literary Society will meet this evening in the Rooms, Wellesley-strect, at half-past seven o'clock, when a debate will take place in reference to the recent American treaty.

Some of the prettiest novelties in bijouterie we have noticed for a long time, attract the eye at present in the windows of Mr. Beck, jeweller. These are some of the most exquisitely-wrought necklets, eavrings, and bioochos, in silver gilt Maltese work. This stylo of jewellery is sure to become popular, combining, as it does, richness and li-rhtness ; and being, as far as cost is concerned, within the reach of most purses.

Our Wangarei correspondent informs us that Mr. Walter Pratt, a watchmaker, &o, thero, was arrested a few days since on a charge of selling arms and ammunition to certain natives, in the mouths of May and June last, contrary to the 28th section of tlie Arms Act, 1860. The arrest was effected by Detoclivo O'Brien, A.C., a member of the detective force on duty in the North Island (in convection witli the working of the Arms Act, &c), acting under the directions of Inspector Thomson, of the Armed Constabulary. The prisoner is now on remand. It is rumoured that there are several charges of the above character to be brought forward.
