[advertisement.] TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE BOROUGH OF AUCKLAND. Ladies and Gentlemen, —Having been nominated by Messrs. W. C. Wilson, C. J. Stone, J. Y. Stevenson, and T. B. Hill as a CANDIDATE for a scat, in the Borough Council, and several gentlemen having actively interested themselves to secure my return, I beg to express my thanks, and trust that their efforts will be crowned with success. As a native of the colony I take a deep interest in its prosperity, more especially in this province. As a citizen of Auckland, I am willing to do my duty, and this (if I am elected) will be my main object in the City Council. As " actions speak louder than words," I will leave the matter with you, reminding you that the poll opens at .8 o'clock a.m. and closes at 4 p.m., on Thursday, the 14th instant, at the Mechanics' Institute.—l am, &c, Richard Honns. EXPLANATION. To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir, —At. a meeting of the ratepayers of the Borough Council on Saturday evening last, which I should have attended but for sovere illness, Mr. T. B. Hill kindly addressed the meeting on my behalf, but it' he slated what, is reported to have been said in the papers, ithas placed mo in a false position as to the " Permissive" question, which has nothing whatever to do, that I know of, with the Borough Council. Some months ago, unsolicited by anyone, and from no pressure at the time of an election, I signed the petition in favor of the Permissive Bill. I did it because I felt that the time had arrived when we ought to have a very different Licensing Act or a Permissive Bill. Mr. Hill knows that I am not a teetotaller, but I consider the granting of licenses by a " packed" Bench to almost any applicant, though quite unnecessary, to be a crying evil.—l am, &c., Richard Hours. Sir, —Mr. R. Hobbs having shown me the above letter, I »m quite content to let the ratepayers present at the meeting referred to put their own proper interpretation upon what I said of Mr. Hobbs relative to the Permissive Bill, &c. By inserting these few lines at the foot of Mr. Hobbs' letter, you will oblige, yours, &c, T. B. Hill. WANTED— A General Servant.- Apply at (he office of this paper.
