[ADVBBTISBMENT.] 10 THE RATEPAYERS OP THE BOROUGH OF AUCKLAND. liAßlks and Gentlemen, —HaviDg been nominated by Messes. W. C. Wilson, 0. J. Stone, J. Y. Stevenson, and IV B. Hilli as a CANDIDATE for a scat in the Borough Council, and several gentlemen having actively interested themselves to secure niy return, I beg to express my thanks, and trust that their efforts will be crowned with success. As a nativo of the colony I tako n, deep interest in its prosperity, more especially in this province. Ab a citizen of Auckland, lam willing to do roy duty, and this (if I am elected) will be my main object in the City Council. As " actions speak louder than words," I will leave the matter with you, reminding you that the poll menu at 8 o'clock a.m. and closes at 4 p.m., on Thursday, the 14th instant, at the Mechanics' Institute.— I am, &c, KICHAKD HOSBS. EXPLAJNiJ-lON. To the Editor of the Evening Stab. g IB) _At a meeting of the ratepayers of the Borough Council on Saturday evening last, ■which I should have nt.tended but for severe illness, Mr. T. B. Hill kindly addressed the meeting on my behiilf, but if he .stated what is reported to lmve been said in the papers, it has placed me in ;i false position as to the " Permissive" question, whicli has nothing whatever to do, that I know of, with the Borough Council. Some months ago, unsolicited by j anyone, and from no pressure it the time of an election, I signed the petition in favor of the Permissive Bill. I did it'because 1 felt that the time hnd arrived when we ought to have a very different Licensing Act Or a Permissive Bill. Mr. Hill knows that I am not a teetotaller, but I consider the granting of licenses by a " packed" Bench to almost any applicant, though quite unnecessary, to be a crying evil.— I am, &c., BICIIABD HOBIiS. SlB, —Mr. R. Hobbs having shown 'rue the above letter, I am quite content to let the ratepayers present at the meeting referred to put their own proper interpretation uponi what I said of Mr. Hobbs relative to the Permissive Bill, &c. By inserting these few lines at the foot of Mr. Hobbs' letter, you will oblige, yours, &c, T. B. Hiix. ;
