The Evening Star.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 31, 1871.

" For the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance,; And the good that we can do."

To-morrow evening the performance at the Great World Circus will be for the benefit of Mrs. Murray, whose endeavours to delight the Auckland public have always been crowned with the most unqualified success. We trust she will have no causo to complain of want of attendance; and fully expect, that if tho weather be at all reasonable, the circus will be crowded, as it was last night.

We have received a list of subscriptions in aid of the widow of the late Wrn. ITotheringham, and an account of tho distribution—with other particulars, but by reason of press of matter, aro compelled to hold it back till tomorrow.

That well known and able restaurateur, Mr. Canning, opened his new Cafe in Queenstreet this morning. It occupies part of Mr. Crombie's premises recently occupied by Messrs. Keesing, Doitsh and Keesing, and has been fitted up in a remarkably neat and convenient manner. In front is the confectionery department, and immediately in rear of this is a long room nicely arranged as a dining-establishraent. Lp stairs are several rooms neatly fitted up for the especial accommodation of ladies, and on the same floor there is a lavatory, with water laid on, and every other convenience. Mr. Canning is so well known that it would be a work of supererogation to comment on his ability as a maitre tie cuisine, and we are pleased to find that his efforts to establish a Cafe of a superior class have been crowned with tho success, which, it would appear from the great number of visitors to-day, be is likely to meet with. We may mention that his establishment in Shorfcland Crescent will still be carried on in the usual effective manner.

The monthly parade of the Auckland Rifle Volunteers will take place at the Drill-shed this evening. Every member is expected to be present. The large pouch to be worn.

The business at the Police Court this morn • ing was settled in about two miautes by fining one drunkard and imposing a smail amount of agistment for tho use of a grassy road occupied by a straggling cow.

Wo observe that another building is in course of erection on the western side of the jetty on one of the harbour endowment allotments, and a good many substantial tea-tree piles have been driven.

The Mayor gives notice that an election will be held on Thursday, 14ili September, for the return of three qualified persons to serve as Councillors for the city of Auckland. Candidates will requiro to bo nominated before the 6th September.

A special meeting of the Albion Quartz Mining Company will be held at tho Mechanics' Institute on the 11th September.

A public meeting of tho gas consumers of Auckland is convened to bo held on Friday next, at the Mechanics' Institute.

Meetings (second) of creditors were held yesterday in tho estate of Peter McTavish and J. F. Cobb, but in consequence of the paucity of attendance and no opposition having been entered, the estates were remitted for adtrjistration of the Provisional Trustee in Bankruptcy.

Wo are requested to mention that a meeting of the parishioners of St. Matthew's Church will be held this evening, at 7.30 o'clock, for the purpose of nominating candi-•-.--fnv the office of Synodsmen^ for the parish.

Notice is given that James Rice, contractor, has become insolvent.
