To tho Editor of the Evening Stae.
Sib, —I think Mr. Tonks stated that the G-as Company could pay 40 per cent, profit. Like many others, I was rather surprised at the assertion, and must say that I did not bolievo Mr. Tonks. He adduced no figures to provo what he said. 1 have had the curiosity to examine the last year's balance-sheet of tho company. The gross receipts for gas (less interest) was £9,986 ; tho expenditure to earu this money, including £66 bad debts, was £5,861; leaving a net profit cf £4,125. ; £ lt requires £4,275 to pay 15 per cent., this i 8 £159 more than the not profit. Consequently the company did not make a profit on tho manufacture of gas last year, of 15 per cent., by £150. Will Mr. Tonks show that he is right aud I am wrong ? 1 respectfully request him to make tho trial, or con'ess his ignorance, or his wilfully stating that which was not true, in order to create a false impression.—I am,&o., ~ JTiaußESi August 24,1871. , .
