We were shown this morning some splendid specimens from the Cock-a-Doodle-Doo claim, lararu. We are glad to observe that tho civic authorities have taken prompt advantage of the present fine weather, an;! that ;nrtie=i of men are now omployed in various par.s of tho city in repairing the damages done to tho streets during the long continuance of wot. The new moon has commenced auspiciously, nnrl tho barometer being steady, wo may hope for a reasonably long period without a superabmidance of moisture.
Residents ;it North Shore should observe that tlie ferry steamer " Dcvouport," will bo [aid up for punting &c, during next week, md will resume her trips on the evening of tiiis day week.
Wo understand that Mr. B. N. Jones is in treaty with Madame Agatha States, to give a short season of Italian Opera at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Madame States and an opera company are now playing with great success in Francisco, and will arrive in Auckland, en route for Australia, about October next. Madame States, during her experience in tho chief cities of Europe, including Florenco, Madrid, Paris, and London, achieved an eminent name among the most celebrated of liring vocalists, and if she and her opera cony pany should be induced to give a short season in Auckland, wo' may anticipate a great musical treat.
The Secretary .-of State for Iho Colonies hns instructed his Excellency tho Governor to recognise tlie appointment of Mr. D. B. Cruickshank as Consul for Chili at Auckland.
The following Militia and Volunteer notices appear in a late gazotte :—No. 1 Company A.R.V., J. B. Mclntyro to be Ensign ; No. 4 Company A.R.V., Lieut. A. Morrow to be Captain, C. P. Phillips to be Lieutenant. The following resignation of commissions have been accopted : —Captain J. Skeno, No. 1 Company Thames Rifle Rangers; Ensign J. H. Hendry, No. 1 Company Hauraki Rifle Volunteers ; Ensign H. Skone, No. 1 Company Thames Rifle Rangers.
His Honor the Superintendent returned from Dunedin to Wellington by the s.s. Phoebe.
