AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD.
Yesterday* Enterprise No. I.—A letter was_ received from Messrs. Holmes .Brothers,, asking, for a reduction of fees paid by that boat, —It was resolved not to entertain the request;* ~ ; . . Noetic Shoee Eeeky Sebvice'.—A letter was received from Captain Burgess in reference to the North Shore whar?es, and the rules and regulations in reference to the North Shore steam ferry service.—The letter was referred to the Wharf Committee, to report thereon. The DBfoNtOET Whaeit. —A letter was received from Mr. James, Hammond, who stated that he had advanced £30 towards the construction of the wharf at Devonport, of which he had only received £5 in repayment. He trusted to the Board to repay him the amount which he had advanced in good faith. —Some discussion took place, some of the members contending that the money ought to be paid by that Hoard; others tbat the Board had nothing to do with it, and that it was a dangerous precedent to establish.—The matter was referred to a Wharf Committee.
The Old Maori Market.—lt was resolved that the site of the old l^aori market should be leased by, auction.. ~ Mr. J. G. Freer.—A letter was- received from Mr. J. G. Freer, asking if he might be allowed to build an office on the wharf at his own expense. .The matter was ordered to stand over for future consideration.
Lettehs feom the Provincial Government. —A letter was received from the Provincial Government, stating that the amount of £625 could not at present be paid to the Board, but they must await the result of a discussion on the subject by the Provincial Executive.—A statement of accounts was also received by the Board.' The Provincial Secretary stated that during the last six months the expenditure on the harbour, &c, hafl exceeded the income.
Delkgation of Powers.—A letter was road from the Colonial Secretary on the subject of the delegation of the Governor's powers to the Harbour Board. v .
The Collector of Customs.—A letter-was read from the Provincial Secretary, suggesting that the Collector of Customs in Auckland should be ex officio a member of the Board. —The Board seemed to think that, on the whole, such an arrangement would be well, and the Board passed a resolution affirming, that they were quite willing to receive the Collector of the Government as a member of that Board. —Another letter, was read from the Provincial Government explanatory tothe loan.—Mr. Tonics moved that all the letters on finance bo referred to the Finance Com-
mittee. Wharfage Dues.—A lettter was read from Messrs. T. and S. Morrin, asking for a reduction of wharfage dues.—The request of "'the letter was not agreed to, the Board agree? ing that they could in no such case remit the fees.
Gas Company.—A letter -was read from the secretary of the gas company, offering to supply Jamps and lighting for the sum of £12 10s. eac).' per annum, or a-totial of i>l4; per' annum, including everything.—The letter was referred to the Lighting Comuiittee, Wthi a recommendation that they ehould consider seriously whether it werenotpossifahs to'light the wharf with anything else than gas, in consequence of the excessive'cliarges of the Gas Company.—Mr. Macready said they had better submit to th,e. Gas .Gonipany, for ;l it. was perfectly impossible t j "light the. wharf with kerosene. The offer of the Gas .Company was accordingly closed with' by the Board, who will convey to the GSas Company Ihe feelings of the Board that the charges are excessive.—A le.tter was received - from Captain Ellis, asking that the Board would authorise him to put down, mooring, in pla.ee.of the dolphin lately knocked down' by' the ila". Hero.—Tho necessary authority was given. Receivers.— A; letter was received from bb-' veral receivers on thu wharf, asking for more accommodation.—A letter was also read' fro'H't' Mr. Freer, as above, lie having started business as a receiver. It was stated that iiLba-y ear was received for each of these .oflices. —The letter was referred to the wlnirfCsinuiittde, with authority to expend the sum of not more than £25.—Mr. Yon der Heyde isaid that there was far too much work thrown on to the shoulders of the Wharf Committee.■ >J He; Bhould have to retire from that committee.
Fish-makket. — A plan of a now fishmarket, drawn up by the Wharf Committee, was submitted to the meeting. It ia proposed to ereot a largo galvanised icon shed on the T opposite the watermen's hoiSe, to huvo it, divided into'stalls, and with1 regulations to keep it clean.
