IMPORTANT FIJI NEWS.

IMPORTANT FIJI NEWS. Thbee days before the Merlin left Levuku, Maafn, the Tongan chief, and great rival of Cakobau for the chieftainship of Fiji, arrived. In the course of a day or two he, was prevailed upon to take the oath of allegiance to pakobau as King of Fiji, himself being nominated Governor of the Windward Islands, at a fixed salary; at his death, the Windward Islands to cease from being under Tongan influence, and come under the absolute control of Cakobau, or his successor. This important step on the part of Maafu removes a difficulty which clouded the future of Fiji, for so long as the union of these two great chiefs remains un- j broken, internal war will be averted.
