TOTAL WRECK OF THE 'WATERMAN.'
HEAVY FLOODS IN CHRISTCHURCH. DEATH OF MR. J. GILLIES. FEARFUL GALES AT CHARLESTON. THE EIRE AT WANGANUI. ARREST OF McDONALD ON SUSPICION. Br the arrival of the p.s. 'Luna' from Wellington, we have received late papers from the South, from which we extract the following :— WHANGANUI. July 21. —A man named MoDonald has been charged with setting fire to the Wangaehu Hotel, recently, whon a man was burned to death. The police found a portmanteau, books, a bedstead, and other property secreted. The evidence taken in the Magistrate's Court identifies them as McDonald's property. There is great excitement. He is remanded to Monday. July 24, 2.24 p.m.—ln re McDonald (of Wangaehu) remanded on the capital and other charges until the 31st instant. The police still recovering goods which have been " planted;" no bail granted.
