• : ♦ " For the cause that lacks assistance. For th« wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance, And the good that we can do."
We do not hesitate to sincerely congratulate our citizens on the circumstance of Mr. Tonka having entered into local public affairs. We shall doubtless find Mr. Tonks tripping sometimes, and we shall be prepared to criticise him as severely as he deserves, but there have been a practicalness and a common sense, hitherto about his efforts, that deserve praise. We observe that he has, brought up in the Harbour Board that abomination of desolation, the debateable territory of the intake, and has taken steps to bring about a conference between the two new corporate bodies, for the suppression of the nuisance. In his capacity as City Councillor he has recently drawn the Council towards the same object by his intended motion with reference to the drainage of the city, and it is just by such a conference that we may hope to see something practical done to abate this disgusting nuisance and nursery of death. That the removal of this evil belongs more properly to the City Council cannot be questioned ; and, as representative of citizens, it should be compelled to shoot its rubbish elsewhere. But as by occupation it has established a kind of right to this neutral territory as its filth depot, it is really advisable that the two bodies—both aiming at the welfare of the citizens—should amicably arrange the matter, and to this end Mr. Tonks' action is exceedingly well-timed. We trust the Harbour .Board will. favourably entertain the proposal, and that our city will soon retire from the unenviable pre-emi-nence of being the most ill-smelling city in the Australias.
