MR. VOGEL IN LONDON.
Mr. Vogel is still in town, and very much occupied. It is said that, having so successfully completed the negotiation of the loan, he is now endeavouring to negotiate with the great contractor, Mr. A. Brogden, for the construction of railways in New Zealand. About Whitehall they say that Mr. Vogel fc very energetic in trying to persuade the Colonial Office and the Admiralty that certain things might be beneficially done with a view to the naval defence of the colony, witho.ut imposing additional taxation upon this country. I should think he will have to charm wisely if he is to succeed in convincing Mr. Goschcn that ships may profitably be stationed upon the New Zealaud coasts. Ido not hear that much is being done in the matter of flax competition, about whioh the colonial papers spoke some months ago ; but inquiries as to the most profitable uses of the fibre, and also as to various kinds of machinery, are said to be afoet, under Mr. Vogel's direction. He was presented at the last Levee, hold by the Prince of Wales for the Queen, at St. James's Palace. The presentation was made by Lord Kimberley. At a Drawing Room held by the Queen the other day, Mrs. Vogel had the honor of being presented by Countess Gmuville, on behalf of ihe Countess of Kimberley ; and at the same Drawing Room Lady Chute and Mrs. Lambert were presented. I must add that Mr. Vogel has beeu elected an honorary member of the Refoim Club, and generally in official and political circle jhe is receiving much attention.—Letter in European Mail, May 19.
