After rounding Wangaparoa the wind blew - very strong from the N. W., with heavy squills^ James Conley, working on board, was standing by to let go the throat and peak halyards, when a very heavy squall coming on she carried away her staysail sheet. The thimble of the clue hit Conley in the eye when the squall was s>t its highest, and cut the pupil of the eye dean away. He, with great presence of mind, although so seriously hurt, let go the halyard in the squall, or the consequences to the* boat would have been far more serious.
