July 6.—The University social gathering was attended by over 900 persons. Judge Chapman and Professor Said were the principal speakers. The latter strongly advocated the admission of female students. The evening classes were highly successful 5 nearly sixty students havo already entered. There was a keen competition for the Knox Church University Scholarship. Ferguson, of Tokomairiro, was the successful competitor.

July 7. — The Cleopatra and Dagmar have sailed for Lyttelton. The Sarah, and Mary, and Zephyr, from Melbourne have been towed in. The former has been in the roadstead since June 25 : the latter since July 3. Their detention outside was caused by the continuous heavy sea on the bar.

July s.—The schooner Cora Russell, whilst beating in, struok on Tewai Point. She was got off, and, on being brought up to the wharf, she had four feet water in the hold. The cargo was being rapidly discharged, as, in consequence of fifty bags of lime being on board, it had become ignited.

July 6.—A chess match by telegraph between Christchurch and Dunedin Chess Club 3 was won last night by Chriatchurch.
