The Evening Star.

MONDAY, JULY 10, 1871.

" For the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance, And the good that we can do."

There has been a good deal of comment respecting a letter which appeared in our contemporary the . Herald last week, and which made a most unjustifiable allusion to Captain Anderson. We do not descend to enquire by what means the public have come to the conclusion that the member of the Harbour Board referred to is Captain Anderson ; nor yet by which it has become equally well known who is the writer that, for the occasion assumed the norn de plume of " North Shore Marine." Anyone accustomed to the disguises of anonymous writing could not fail to see that the writer could not be a resident on North Shore; aud the efforts made to make believe that the document came from North Shore like a rogue's efforts to convince people of his honesty, has naturally resulted in showing that the writer does not reside al. North Shore. "My side of the water." " You are not well governed over there," &c, show evident efforts at concealment ; and internal evidence in the letter itself, and the public finger, equally point to Parnell as containing the autjior of the spiteful attack on Captain Anderson. The writer who thus conceals himself in a mask with scrupulous care, and stabs in the dark, has the impertinence to make an assertion at hazard, knowing perfectly well that it is a falsehood. He saya that he is credibly informed that a " move" will shortly be made to displace Captain Ellis, and give his " billet" to Captain Anderson. It such was the intention it has miserably tailed, and a very general feeling ol indignation has been excited against the pitiful scribbler, who is very well known. .This is one of those cases in which an' anonymous writer should have hia mask torn away ; and if our contemporary would only suspend etiquette, and give up the writer, seeing that the statements are wholly unfounded and purely vindictive, an act of just retribution would be performed. If such is done, we shall be happy to treat the writer as he merits, opening him up and spreading him c:tt to the public gaze, as a warning to all spiteful and untruthful writers.
