CONTINENTAL FASHIONS.
Euane de Maest, of The Queen, recounts the event of a charming ball which took place at Q-eneva. Several pretty American ladies were present at it, and danced away happily ; bat not one Frenchwoman. would consent to dance, and indicated, without exception, their resolution to this eG'cct beforehand by making their appearance in high dresses.
I will describe two of these high, evening toilettes. Train of fiiille, the shade of green known as vert d'eau, covered with a splendid^.tunic of Alcngon lace, open in front, and looped up at the sides with green satin bows. Bodice with bavque at the back, edged with Alenson lace; large Louis XIII. pelerine pointed back and front, and ornamented the .entire length of .the .chest with, green, satin , bows. The hair arranged in the Ophelia style, falling loosejy on the shoulders, with a I long garland of narcissus aud lily leaves. The- second was a "Duchesse de Bourgogne " toilette, and consisted of a skirt of turquois-blue gros graini^aovetedi nearly to the waist with festooned flounces ; small tunic of black fuille, trimmed with blue silk fringe i and. Flanders 3nce.-; This" tunic, whiohrpHjy:'; I exteiide:! to lite sides, was attached to a taraih I of; black fmlje, lined with blue* and. lopped up nt ttiejhif.s wil.li a large bow' of blue faille. IChe' train is edged with a row of Flanders lace ; [pointed bodice of black faille, ornamontoci with: a ladder of blue bows. . This , bodice [opens square, arid the opening is edged with a'row-of J?lemiah lace. .Pagoda sleexes,^,., with Flemish Jaee under-sleevos; a tuft of fjJnree natural roses cwas fastened on the left j stile of the bodice. Natural rosea in the hair* Hungarian ornaments in garnets and ;tiirquoise^. Alexandrinagloves of straw kid, with, eight tiuttons.-r.Lo.nsash of blue faille. in ; the ■ back. • .. j'.'i (- ' .;■...
